History Of Python:
Why Name “Python”?
- Python was developed by Guido Van Rossum in the late 1980s.
- Rossum published the first version of Python code (0.9.0) 27 Feb 1991 at the CWI (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica) in the Netherlands , Amsterdam.
- Real implementation was started in December, 1989.
- Python is derived from ABC programming language, which is a general-purpose programming language that had been developed at the CWI.
- Python came into the market before Java. Java came into market in 1996 and Python in 1989.
- Python is now maintained by a core development team at the institute, although Rossum still holds a vital role in directing its progress (till 2018).
Why Name “Python”?
- In December 1989, Van Rossum had been looking for a "'hobby' programming project that would keep him occupied during the week around Christmas" as his office was closed when he decided to write an interpreter for a "new scripting language he had been thinking about lately: a descendant of ABC that would appeal to Unix/C hackers.
- When he began implementing Python, Guido van Rossum was also reading the published scripts from “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”, a BBC comedy series from the 1970s. Van Rossum thought he needed a name that was short, unique, and slightly mysterious, so he decided to call the language Python.
